12 districts affected by inclement weather

12 districts across the island have been affected by the prevailing inclement weather.

The Disaster Management Centre stated that 4,126 people from 1,156 families have been affected, while 569 people have been displaced at present.

Three people in a house which had been swept away in a landslide in Walapane, Nuwara-Eliya have died, while another remains missing.

The incident had occurred due to the heavy rains experienced last night in the area.

The victims have been identified as a 17 year old girl and both her grandparents.

A search operation carried out by the Army and area residents is also underway to find the body of her younger brother which is believed to be have been swept under a mound of rubble.

Meanwhile the water levels of several rivers have risen due to incessant rains.

A minor flood level has been reported from Dunamale, Attanagalu Oya, whilst the DMC also noted that water levels from the Millakanda, Kalu River and the Panadugama, Nilwala River have also reached warning levels. Additionally spill gates remain open in several major reservoirs.

Meanwhile power outages have been reported since last night and this morning due to trees falling on power lines.

Around 5000 consumers have been affected in several areas including Diyathalawa, Bandarawela, Haputhale, Welimada, Kandy, Kurunegala and Ruwanwella.

Speaking to NewsRadio Media Spokesman for the Ministry of Power Sulakshana Jayawardene said efforts are underway to restore the power supply to affected areas.
