13 arrested during post election period-Police

The Police says 13 persons have been arrested thus far over various incidents reported during the post-election period.

Police Media Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunesekera said 19 complaints were lodged with Police after the 16th of November.

The SSP said several statements have been made over the inaction pertaining to complaints lodged over post-election incidents.

The Police Media Spokesman said of the 19 complaints, 13 were related to assault incidents, 4 related to intimidation were and 2 over damages to establishments.

The Police Media Spokesman added that investigations are continuing to arrest others involved in the incidents, while reiterating that complaints of serious nature have not been reported.

Comparing the 2019 post Presidential Election period with that of the 2015 Presidential Election period,

Police Media Spokesman SSP Ruwan Gunesekera said 49 post-election complaints were recorded in 2015.

He noted that the Secretary of Defence Kamal Gunaratne issued instructions to ensure that peace is maintained across the island.

The Defence Secretary also called for legal action to be taken against all individuals found to be violating the law.
