The All Island Fisheries Federation says nearly 350,000kg of unsold fish are languishing at the Galle and Beruwala fisheries harbours, at present.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Convenor of the Association Rathna Gamage said following the spike in coronavirus cases from the Peliyagoda fish market, the public had been reluctant to purchase fish.

He therefore urged the Ministry of Fisheries to educate the public pertaining to the matter.

Rathna Gamage noted the government should also intervene and help sell the stocks that are currently stored in boats and cold storages across several parts of the country.

The Convenor of the All Island Fisheries Federation said the government should also take steps to conduct PCR tests on all fishermen and others involved in the industry.

Rathna Gamage said since a majority of the recent COVID-19 cases have been detected from those part of the industry or their associates, fishermen, wholesalers and retailers should be educated about handling fish safely and also pertaining to health protocols.
