AHMD Nawaz steps down from Gnanasara case

Chairman of the Court of Appeal AHMD Nawaz has withdrawn from the examination of the case into venerable Galagodaththe Gnansara thera and two others, on the charge of Contempt of Court.

The Chairman informed Court today, when the complaint was taken up for hearing, that he is withdrawing himself owing to a personal reason.

The bench includes justice Sobitha Rajakaruna.

Accordingly, the case will continue to be heard before judges Mahinda Samayawardena and Arjuna Obeysekera.

The complaint was lodged by Former Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian Shanthi Skandarajah claiming an order issued by the Mullaitivu Magistrates Court pertaining to the cremation of the late Chief Incumbent of the Mullaitivu Gurukanda Rajamaha Viharaya last year was violated thereby deeming the defendant’s actions in Contempt of Court.

Gnansara thera, Senior Superintendent of Police of Mullaitivu and the Inspector of Police of the Mullaitivu Headquarters have been cited as respondents in the case.

The two Policemen were released by the Appeals Court today while the case will be taken up again on the 20th of October.
