Writ filed by Bathiudeen to be considered today

The writ petition filed by Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen before the Court of Appeal requesting an order to prevent his arrest will be considered today.

The petition will be heard before judges Kumuduni Wickramasinghe and Sobitha Rajakaruna.

The Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne, Deputy Inspector General in Charge of the Criminal Investigations Department SP Ranasinghe, the Sub Police Inspector conducting investigations and four others have been cited as respondents in the petition.

The petition cites that the CID is attempting to arrest him on false grounds that he misappropriated state funds by transporting internally displaced persons from Puttalam to Mannar during the period of the 2019 Presidential Election.

MP Bathiudeen is seeking an order from the Appeals Court claiming the charge is inconsistent with the law.

MP Rishad Bathiudeen, was arrested at an apartment complex yesterday by the Criminal Investigations Department, and was remanded till the 27th of October by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.

He was arrested on charges of criminal misappropriation of public funds and violation of election laws over the transportation of internally displaced persons in Sri Lanka Transport Board owned buses during the 2019 Presidential Election.

MP Bathiudeen is being charged on violating section 387 of the Criminal Code and section five of the Public Property Act and also for the violation of section 82 and 86 of the Presidential Election Act.
