The JVP has demanded the government to sell all luxury vehicles that are to be imported to Sri Lanka at a public auction and use the funds for the benefit of the people, in the event it is unable to cancel the Letters of Credit opened to import 227 vehicles for Parliamentarians.

Leader of the JVP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake revealed that 227 Luxury SUVs will be imported to Sri Lanka, each worth Rs. 50 million.

He accused the government of spending 18 million US dollars to import luxury vehicles for MPs, at a time when the country is grappling with the adverse effects of coronavirus.

The Parliamentarian questioned the need for an elected official to travel in a vehicle that is worth Rs. 50 million when the villagers are suffering due to poverty.

MP Dissanayake stressed on the importance of recovering the cost of importing vehicles, through an auction.

The JVP Leader also accused officials of engaging in major financial scam, in the guise of importing official vehicles.

He pointed out that vehicles were being imported by allies of the government, who would later give commissions of elected officials.

MP Dissanayake revealed that tenders for importing these vehicles were not given out through a competitive bidding process, but rather based on the discretion of certain government members.
