BOI Export Processing Zones to remain open

The Board of Investment says BOI Export Processing Zones will remain open for production activities despite encountering practical issues due to the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

Speaking to NewsRadio, Director General Sanjaya Mohottala said while giving prominence to the safety of employees, all plants including the Katunayake Export Processing Zone will remain open despite the prevailing climate in the country.

He said five zones were under the purview of the BOI in the Gampaha District, including more than 107 factories and over 80,000 employees.

Mohottala said the government has directives to temporarily refrain from employing individuals from Divulapitiya, Gampaha, Mirigama, Minuwangoda, Veyangoda.

The Director General said curfew passes have been issued to other employees as required, in order to continue production.

He said factories can operate at a higher capacity if the BOI, factory management, employees, Tri-forces and the Ministry of Health continue their efforts.
