KANDY BUILDING COLLAPSE

Police is due to table facts before Court against the owner of the five-storey building that collapsed on to a neighbouring house in Buwelikada, Kandy last morning.

Police said action will be taken against the individual under the Criminal Code if it is determined that the approval of the Kandy Municipal Council, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau and other relevant institutions was not obtained prior to constructing the building.

Meanwhile the owner of the building that collapsed speaking to media in Kandy said he did not flee the scene.

Media reports circulated yesterday that he had fled the area.

The individual said they heard noises and stepped outside when they realised what was happening.

A couple and their one-and-a-half-month-old infant died in the collapse early last morning.

The infant was rescued but passed away at the Kandy General Hospital. Five persons were at the house at the time of the incident, while Police rescued two women who were trapped under the rubble.
