The strike action launched by trade unions of the Colombo Port has been temporarily called off.
23 Port trade unions engaged in the strike demanding a written assurance from the President that the East Terminal of the Colombo Port will be vested under the Sri Lanka Ports Authority.
Discussions over their demands were held this morning between the Prime Minister and port trade unions in Tangalle.
The Chairman of the Nidahas Sevaka Sangamaya of the Port Authority Prasanna Kalutarage when contacted by NewsRadio said the talks held with the Prime Minister were fruitful.
He said during the discussion an assurance was given that the Cabinet Paper tabled by subject Minister Johnston Fernando will not be implemented.
Kalutarage added the Prime Minister also vowed to provide the necessary equipment needed for the East Terminal.
He noted that the trade unions will intensify the strike action if authorities fail to meet their demands.
