Col. 3 Crimes OIC passes away due to sudden illness

The Officer in Charge of the Colpetty Police Crimes Division has passed away in the vicinity of Galle Face, due to a sudden illness.
The Colombo National Hospital stated the OIC passed away this morning around 8.00 a.m.
The Police officers remains have been transported to the Colombo National Hospital at present, while the hospital stated the OIC’s remains will subsequently be transferred to the Police mortuary.
A PCR test is also expected to be conducted.
Meanwhile Acting Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana revealed the OIC had collapsed while he was at the Galle Face Green where he regularly engages in exercise, adding he was taken to the General Hospital thereafter.
However DIG Rohana said the OIC was pronounced dead upon admission.
He noted an investigation is being conducted by the Colpetty Police, while an inquest and autopsy will also be conducted today.
DIG Rohana said the cause of death will be determined following the autopsy, however noting the OIC had been a heart patient for a lengthy period of time and undergone surgery for heart disease as well.
Meanwhile Samagi Jana Balawegaya Parliamentarian Ashok Abeysinghe speaking in Parliament today said the Police OIC collapsed while exercising with a mask on.
MP Abeysinghe noted wearing a mask while exercising may affect the heart, as the oxygen flow to the heart is reduced.
The MP called for an awareness programme in this regard, especially for Police officers and security forces personnel.
