The Opposition says a Constitutional Amendment or a new Constitution cannot be formed focused on an individual, adding that the proposed 20th Amendment has been formulated to suit the current President and Prime Minister.
Speaking at a media briefing today Parliamentarian SM Marikkar said the President who defeated the conflict has been made an office assistant through the Amendment, while the President has been vested with many powers.
He claimed that divisions have arisen within the government faction, adding that if the present situation continues the political leadership will divide to two camps, dictatorial and democratic.
The Parliamentarian claimed that a day will subsequently come, when the 20th Amendment is passed and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa will also have to stand with the Opposition to defeat the dictatorship.
