Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera says the rate at which coronavirus is spreading in the country has increased.

Speaking during a media briefing Dr. Samaraweera said if people do not restrict movement, the pandemic may spiral out of control within the next few days.

He warned if the virus continues to spread at such a rate, more deaths due to COVID-19 maybe experienced in the country.

Dr. Sudath Samaraweera stated the virus is increasingly prevalent in patients identified since the detection of new COVID-19 clusters since the 4th of October, while the rate of infection has also increased.

He noted while strict restrictions have not been imposed on public movement at present and curfew has only been imposed in selected areas, citizens continue to interact with more people and socialize.

Dr. Samaraweera stated public gatherings and movement must be restricted as several small clusters were identified through funerals, weddings or religious events.
