COVID patient at Punani treatment centre escapes

A 43-year-old COVID-19 patient at the Punani treatment centre in the Valaichchenai Police area has escaped.
Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said the individual has been identified as a resident of Meethotamulla, Kolonnawa who was employed at a bakery in Kolonnawa.
The Police Media Spokesman said the individual had reportedly escaped around 7:30 last evening.
The DIG added the individual tested positive for COVID-19 on the 13th of January and was directed to the Punani treatment centre on Sunday.
The DIG noted that the suspect is the 14th patient to have escaped a treatment centre since the 4th of October when the second wave of COVID-19 broke out.
He claimed that investigations are being conducted to locate the individual and requested relatives and friends of such escapees to refrain from accommodating them and to promptly inform health authorities or the Police of their whereabouts.
