COVID-19 vaccination trial tomorrow

Health units have made preparations to hold a COVID-19 vaccination trial tomorrow.

Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr. Hemantha Herath said the trial will be carried out at the Piliyandala Medical Office of Health, the Piliyandala District Hospital and the Ragama Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Herath said the trial will be carried out to identify practical issues that could arise when the vaccination drive commences and in order to determine the time spent on vaccinating a certain number of individuals.

He added the Health Ministry is prepared to administer the vaccine as soon as it is received.

He said the Ministry is in the process of updating and researching methods to efficiently administer, store and distribute the vaccine.

Dr. Hemantha Herath on a separate note said 26 COVID-19 patients are currently being treated at Intensive Care Units while patients are being treated at 79 treatment facilities.

He revealed 13,012 beds were prepared to treat patients while noting that 9,399 of them are occupied at present.

He added another 120 ICU beds could be made available if required.

Dr. Herath denied claims that health authorities have lost control of the coronavirus situation with the spread of the virus during the holiday period.

He stressed on the importance of avoiding unnecessary travel at a decisive time when the country is battling the virus.

Dr. Herath also stated that due to increased travel during the holiday period, an increase has been witnessed in the number of coronavirus cases reported daily.
