Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi says the coronavirus cannot be avoided until a vaccine is made available to all globally.

The Minister was responding to a question raised by the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa.

MP Premadasa said the failure to identify the source of the COVID-19 outbreak is concerning adding that it could lead to a critical situation in future.

Premadasa warned that Sri Lanka will face many issues if the source of the cluster is not uncovered.

He also charged government authorities of failing to provide adequate time for associates of apparel factory employees to pack belongings in order to be directed to quarantine centres.

MP Premadasa also accused the government of failing to provide basic facilities such as food and water to factory employees in quarantine centres, claiming that their relatives have raised many complaints.

MP Premadasa questioned the government’s plan to solve these concerns.

The Minister speaking in Parliament today said identifying the source of the first cases reported from the Minuwangoda cluster will require more time.

Minster Wanniarachchi explained that the government commenced investigations to identify the source of the Minuwangoda cluster, as soon as the patient was reported, while taking all possible preventive measures to control the spread of the virus.

The Health Minister said more than 1,500 factory employees were directed to quarantine centres, where they were subject to PCR tests as soon as possible.

She requested for additional time to present information to Parliament on the source of the Minuwangoda cluster, as the information must be verified in order to release a responsible and accurate statement.
