Police say quarantine curfew currently in effect in 49 Police areas across the island will be strictly enforced over the weekend.

Acting Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said vehicles will not be allowed to make stops in curfew-imposed areas. However the DIG said essential services will be able to operate unhindered.

DIG Ajith Rohana also said a total of 759 quarantine violators have also been arrested thus far since the 4th of October, while 71 suspects were arrested in the past 24 hours alone, with 17 vehicles also being taken into Police custody.

He said a total of 110 vehicles have been seized at present.

Meanwhile DIG Rohana urged anyone who had visited the Peliyagoda fish market recently to register at the nearest Police station.

He also called on the general public to cooperate and support authorities to prevent the further spread of the virus.
