A decision has been reached to obtain a deposit when purchasing 180ml bottles of alcohol.
Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said the decision was reached at a discussion held today with the Distillery Corporation and the Excise Commissioner’s Department and other representatives of affiliated organisations.
It was decided that the deposit sum for 180ml liquor bottles should be significant while a final decision on the sum is yet to be reached.
Minister Amaraweera said failure by alcohol manufacturing companies to enforce the regulation will result in the ban on 180ml alcohol bottles.
Experts claim the 180ml alcohol bottles adversely harm the environment.
120 million bottles 180ml alcohol are manufactured annually.
The Ministry of Environment said more than 60% of the bottles cannot be recycled.
