The Elections Commission says the General Election will likely be held on the 25th, 27th, 28th or the 29th of April if Parliament is dissolved on the 1st or 2nd of March.

Speaking to media after an event in Colombo, the Chairman of the Elections Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said the General Election must be conducted before Vesak celebrations.

Deshapriya stressed the election must be held during the last week of April before events such as May Day.

Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya revealed an opinion that the President is prepared to dissolve Parliament in the first week of March, when four and a half years has been completed.

Accordingly, Deshapriya noted that the Election Commission has informed officials to be prepared to enforce the initial steps required from the 5th of February.

If Parliament is dissolved by the 1st, 2nd or 3rd of March, he predicted that the commission will definitely hold the elections before Vesak.

But in a different perspective, Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya says the most convenient date would be on the 25th, 27th, 28th or 29th of April since May Day is also close.
