Election preparations can proceed – DG of Health

President’s Counsel Attorney Romesh Silva representing the Secretary to the President revealed before the Supreme Court today that the Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe has informed his client in writing, that General Election preparations can proceed under the present circumstances.

The Attorney stated the DG of Health Services had highlighted it is now clear that Sri Lanka has succeeded in mitigating the effects of COVID-19 citing the high percentage of recoveries from the virus and the low percentage of fatalities.

The DG of Health Services had stated that as the government had carried out quarantine measures in accordance with World Health Organisations directives, good health and safety practices must continue to be observed in future.

However Attorney Romesh Silva informed the Supreme Court that Dr. Anil Jasinghe had noted that as a vaccine is yet to be found for COVID-19, the threat of the spread of the virus remains a concern.

The consideration of the Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the Gazette issued by the Election Commission to the conduct of the General Election on the 20th of June, was taken up for consideration once again today before a five-member Supreme Court bench led by the Chief Justice for the 5th consecutive day.

The bench comprises of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardene and Vijith Malalgoda.
