‘Enact a new Provincial Council Election Bill’

Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Vajira Abeywardena has recommended the enactment of a new Provincial Council Election Bill to expedite the conduct of the delayed election.
The Minister has proposed the drafting of a new bill to replace the existing Provincial Council Election Act in Parliament.
The proposal was presented during the weekly Cabinet meeting held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena today.
Minister Abeywardene has recommended that the new Provincial Council Election Bill should be enacted with the consent of the President, the Prime Minister, the Speaker and all political party leaders.
Two weeks ago, the Cabinet approved a proposal to conduct the delayed election before the 1st of June.
Accordingly, Subject Minister Vajira Abeywardena today presented his recommendations to the Cabinet.
