‘Fast-track construction of highways & roads’

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has issued directives to officials to fast-track the construction of the Central Expressway including others under construction.
The President issued these directives at a discussion with senior officials of the Ministry of Roads and Highways.
The completion and opening of the first phase of the Matara-Hambantota Expressway was discussed, while the construction of roads and bridges that have stalled and the modernisation of rural roads were ordered to be completed promptly.
The President also instructed officials to seek solutions to the heavy traffic congestion reported along Galle Road, Kaduwela, High-Level Road and Piliyandala.
The President said points of severe traffic congestion must be identified in order to construct flyovers and underground tunnels.
It was also discussed to look into the construction of the road from Dematagoda, Wanathamulla to Battaramulla which will help ease congestion at the Borella and Rajagiriya Junctions.
The extension of Marine Drive to Panadura as a solution to the traffic congestion along Galle Road and Duplication Road was also deliberated.
The President also advised officials to seek the assistance of local engineers for all construction purposes.
President Rajapaksa is of the stance that all public transport systems must be developed in line with the construction of roads and highways.
The government also hopes to deploy luxury buses for school and public transportation in order to minimise the number vehicles entering cities.
