Airport authorities have announced that flying kites within a 5km radius near international and domestic airports in the country is illegal and a punishable offense.
Head of Airport Management SS Hettiarachchi said accordingly the regulation will be enforced for the Katunayake and Mattala International Airports as well as the Ratmalana, Palali, Sigiriya and Koggala domestic airports.
The Airport official stressed the regulation is being enforced in order to prevent parts or debris from kites colliding with and causing damage to aircraft.
