Health authorities have requested the general public to refrain from creating undue fear over the consumption of fish.
Speaking at a media briefing Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said it is vital that health safety measures are followed when preparing meals.
Dr. Samaraweera said it has been revealed that coronavirus may remain on surfaces for a certain period of time, noting while the initial COVID-19 outbreak in Wuhan was linked to a fish market, the possibility of the virus spreading from fish to a human is uncertain.
He noted however there is no need to refrain from consuming fish, if health guidelines are adhered to.
The Chief Epidemiologist urged people to wash hands frequently and to avoid touching the face when cooking fish, in order to minimize the possibility of the virus spreading.
