FR consideration on election postponed to Tuesday

The consideration of the Fundamental Rights petitions filed challenging the gazette issued by the Election Commission to conduct the General Election on the 20th of June, got underway for the fifth consecutive day today and was postponed to next Tuesday at 10am.

The petitions are being heard before a 5-member bench comprising Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya and Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, Sisira de Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardene and Vijith Malalgoda.

President’s Counsel Romesh de Silva representing the Secretary to the President Dr. PB Jayasundara, who has been cited as a respondent in the petitions, made his submissions today.

Additional Solicitor General Indika Demuni is due to make submissions on behalf of the Attorney General next Tuesday.

Attorney Romesh Silva revealed before the Supreme Court today that the Director General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe informed his client in writing, that General Election preparations can proceed under the present circumstances.

The Attorney stated that the DG of Health said it is now clear that Sri Lanka has succeeded in mitigating the effects of COVID-19 citing the high percentage of recoveries from the virus and the low percentage of fatalities.
