Gazette dissolving the 8th Parliament issued

The Extraordinary Gazette notification dissolving the eighth Parliament has been issued.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa through powers vested in him under Article 70 of the Constitution and in pursuance of the Provisions of the Parliamentary Elections Act, No.1 of 1981 proclaimed the dissolution of Parliament on Monday.

The Extraordinary Gazette notification stated that Parliament will be dissolved with effect from midnight yesterday, with the new Parliament summoned to meet on the 14th of 2020.

The President through powers vested in him also fixed the 25th of April as the date for the conduct of the General Election.

The notification also states that  the period beginning on the 12th of March till noon on the 19th of March will be declared as the period to accept nominations.
