The United National Party says the present government has destroyed seven acres of forests per day, since coming into power.
Deputy Leader of the Party Ruwan Wijewardene speaking at an environment conservation event organized by the Youth Front, said the people will be left to pay for the destruction caused by the government.
He hoped the youth would consider the matter seriously, and conserve the environment.
Wijewardene also condemned the President for deciding to construct a road through the Sinharaja Forest.
The UNP Deputy Leader commended the Youth Front for taking initiative to address the concerns.
He said he hopes to educate the youth on the issue of forest conservation within the country, while educating them on ways to preserve the ecosystem.
Despite the need for development, Ruwan Wijewardene was of the view that the country’s resources must be protected for a better future.
