Harin ‘hell-bent’ on ending corruption in sports

Minister of Sports Harin Fernando says new laws should be enacted to end corruption in sports.
Minister Fernando said the proposed new Prevention of Offences relating to Sports Bill should be passed in Parliament immediately, in order to safeguard the country’s sporting traditions.
Speaking in Parliament, the Minister said the proposed new law, will enable courts to punish serious law violators, with a fine of up to Rs.100 million as well as a prison sentence of up to 10 years.
He said the new Bill the Prevention of Offences relating to Sports, will include laws against betting, corruption in sports and other illegal activities.
Minister of Sports Harin Fernando said no one should object the Act introduced to prevent corruption in sports, adding that if objections were raised such persons should be investigated.
The Sports Minister urged the Speaker of House to consider the proposed Act as a matter of importance and call a Party Leaders’ meeting to approve the timings for a debate.
He said the proposal has already been passed by the Oversight Committee and therefore noted it should become legislation in order to end corruption in sports.
