Heat advisory issued in East & several districts

The Department of Meteorology has issued a heat advisory for the Eastern Province and the Polonnaruwa, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi Districts.

The warning said caution is expected in most parts of the Eastern Province and some parts of Polonnaruwa, Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi districts today and tomorrow.

The Department said the Heat Index Forecast is calculated with relative humidity and maximum temperature adding this is the condition that is felt.

This is however not the forecast of maximum temperature.

The Department accordingly called for the public to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible.

While indoors it has been advised to check up on the elderly and the sick, the Department also cautioned to limit strenuous outdoor activities, find shade and stay hydrated.

27-38 has been announced as normal heat, while 39-45 cautions that fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and continuing activity could result in heat cramps.

46-52 has been termed as extreme caution with heat cramps and heat exhaustion possible.

Over 52 is recorded as dangerous with heat cramps and heat exhaustion likely.
