The Jathika Hela Urumaya has accused the President of disregarding his Constitutional duties by failing to convene weekly Cabinet meetings.
Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo today, Vice Chairman of the JHU Deputy Minister Karunarathna Paranawithana said while benefiting from Executive privileges, the President cannot disregard his duties as the Head of State.
The Deputy Minister said, “if the President does not convene the Cabinet then someone else must hold Cabinet meetings as other persons cannot let go of their responsibilities and allow the country to be ruined. According to Article 42/2 of the Constitution, is the President the Head of the Cabinet or just a mere a member? Is he ignoring his constitutional responsibility? I reiterate, if you hold the Presidential post and enjoy the benefits of being a President, the responsibilities of being the President must also be fulfilled. Without fulfilling your responsibilities you cannot just have the post and enjoy the benefits of being the President. During the October coup certain parties misinterpreted the Constitution to the President and we do not know if the same thing has happened today. However these articles must be recognized and the President must work according to them.”
