Lalith Weeratunga’s travel ban temporarily lifted

The Court of Appeal today lifted the overseas travel ban imposed on Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga till the 13th of march 2020.
The order was issued by Appeals Court judges Deepali Wijesundara and Ruwan Fernando.
Weeratunga’s attorneys informed Court that their client has been invited to attend an overseas visit with the President and therefore called for the overseas travel ban to be lifted.
Taking into consideration the request the Appeals Court bench ordered the travel ban to be lifted till the 13th of March.
Former Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga was charged with distributing Sil material with funds belonging to the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission during the 2015 Presidential Election incurring the government financial losses worth Rs.650 million.
He was sentenced to a 3-year imprisonment over the case but was released on bail by the Colombo High Court in 2017 and was banned from travelling overseas.
