Lankan part of a global drug network granted bail

Court today granted bail to a resident of Dehiwala, who was arrested for attempting to purchase 437kg of heroin and 137kg of ICE from Iranian nationals in Southern seas, last year.

The order was issued by the Colombo High Court Judge Adithya Patabendige.

The suspect, Hewathanthrige Chathusi Jayasri, a has been identified as the local representative of a large international drug network.

NewsRadio court correspondent said after considering the bail application, the Judge released the suspect on a Rs.250,000 cash bail and two surety bails amounting to Rs.500,000 each.

Court has also imposed an international travel ban on the suspect.

On the 21st of February 2020, 28 Iranian Nationals were apprehended in Southern seas with a stock of 437Kgs of Heroin and 137Kgs of the narcotic substance known as ICE, during a joint operation carried out by the Police Narcotic Bureau and the Sri Lanka Navy.

Following a two-week operation, the Police Narcotic Bureau arrested the suspect Hewathanthrige Chathusi Jayasri at a hotel in Dickwella, for attempting to purchase the stock of narcotics from the Iranian nationals.

Meanwhile, 10 Iranian nationals who were arrested in relation to the incident have been further remanded.
