Large crowds in Gampaha with easing of curfew

Stores selling essential commodities and pharmacies in the Gampaha district were allowed to open at 8 this morning.

Permission was also granted for state and private banks to open today.

Following the re-opening of stores, the movement of people and heavy traffic congestion were reported in Gampaha today.

NewsRadio area correspondents said long queues were reported in the vicinity of vegetable stalls and retail stores.

Our reporters said supermarkets, cooperative stores, pharmacies, filling stations and banks were filled with patrons.

Police presence has also been increased while roadblocks have been setup following the easing of restrictions.

Our reporters noted that Gampaha residents have been wearing face coverings and also taking other precautionary measures.

Quarantine curfew is currently in effect within 64 police areas in four districts.

Police said curfew has been imposed to 37 police areas in the Gampaha district, 19 in Colombo, five in Kurunegala and three police areas in the Kalutara district.

Acting Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Rohana said residents in curfew-imposed areas must remain indoors at all times and special provisions have been made only to complete their essential tasks.
