Prison officers have seized two mobile phones found concealed in a food parcel, which was to be given to an inmate of the Mahara Prison.
The Prisons Department stated the parcel was brought to the prison last evening by an external individual who had arrived to visit an inmate.
Following an order issued via telephone from a senior prison officer the individual in question was allowed to proceed to the main door of the prison along with the parcel.
However when the parcel was inspected, the two mobile phones and tobacco powder was found concealed within.
Accordingly the Commissioner General of Prisons has ordered Prisons Intelligence to launch an immediate probe into the incident, as it had occurred despite the imposition of a ban on allowing visitors to see inmates, or allowing external parties into the prison premises.
