Mahara Prison unrest: 9 fatalities COVID positive

PCR tests conducted on the remains of nine out of 11 inmates who died in the unrest at the Mahara Prison have returned positive for COVID-19.

When inquired by NewsRadio Director of the Ragama Teaching Hospital Dr. Shelton Perera said the bodies of the remaining two deceased inmates will be tested for the virus today.

Meanwhile 38 among 50 inmates who were injured in the unrest have tested positive for coronavirus as of yesterday.

The Hospital Director said apart from 28 injured inmates, all others have been transferred to the Welikada Prison, adding the remaining 28 inmates who are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital will also be transferred to Welikada promptly.
