State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake says the operation that led to the arrest of drug kingpin Makandure Madush was launched one and a half years ago.

Speaking to media in Colombo State Minister Ramanayake said the credit of this operation should be enjoyed by the President, the Prime Minister, the government and the Police Special Task Force.

The State Minister noted the Head of State extended the tenure of Commander Latheef by a year at the time of his retirement claiming if the service extension was not handed then the operation would not have been possible.

State Minister Ramanayake stressed therefore Commander Latheef, all STF personnel, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers Sagala Rathnayake and Ranjith Madduma Bandara should take credit for the mission.

The State Minister reiterated the Law and Order Ministry was brought under the purview of the President three months ago but the operation to arrest Madush was launched one and a half years ago.

State Minister Ramanayake said he is in favour of the President’s decision to enforce the death penalty against drug racketeers.

The State Minister claimed when considering the history of capital punishment it was justified only when faced with personal issues.

State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake noted he cannot determine the final decision of President Maithripala Sirisena adding the Head of State has to face many challenges including concerns raised by the UN.

The State Minister stressed his opinion remains unchanged that the capital punishment should be enforced on criminals including rapists and murderers.
