Man held over fake call on Parliament attack

A 57-year old man has been arrested from Ella, Badulla for alerting officials via the 119 hotline on a purported attack on Parliament.

Police Media Spokesperson Superintendent of Police Ruwan Gunasekara said the false statement was directed to the Colombo Fort Police Station on Friday.

He said the suspect; a permanent resident of Borella had informed of a plot, devised by a group at a place of worship in Colombo Fort, to attack the Parliament.

Following the phone call, an investigation had been launched and subsequently police had determined that the falsified information was conveyed to cause panic amongst the public.

The Police Media Spokesperson said the suspect was arrested by a special team while a mobile phone and a sim card were also seized from the possession of the suspect.

He is being held at the Colombo Fort Police Station.

SP Ruwan Gunasekara said police will take stern action against all persons who disrupt law and order, under emergency regulations.
