State Minister of Prison Reforms and Prisoners’ Rehabilitation Sudarshini Fernandopulle says a large number of accused are being held in remand custody at present, owing to delays in obtaining Government Analyst reports.
State Minister Fernandopulle said if a mechanism exists to expeditiously obtain reports from the Government Analyst, a large number of persons in remand custody can be produced in courts and granted bail.
The State Minister of Prison Reforms spoke to media in Kandy yesterday after vesting several prisons premises.
She said although Sri Lanka has a prison capacity of 11,000, at present nearly 30,000 are being held in jails across the country.
The State Minister also noted she hopes to fill around 2,000 vacancies that exist within the Prisons Department.
