Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam refutes all claims that the Ministry of Education is politicised.
Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the expenditure heads of the Education Ministry, Minister Kariyawasam made this statement in response to an inquiry by United People’s Freedom Alliance Parliamentarian Bandula Gunewardene.
UPFA MP Mahinda Amaraweera commended the government’s ළගම පාසල හොඳම පාසල project.
MP Gunewardene claimed the previous government did not not engage in politics within the Ministry of Education, adding however today school principals are being transferred for various reasons.
He therefore called for principals to be appointed according to circulars.
Responding to the charges the Minister of Education stressed it is entirely false that politics have interfered in the Ministry of Education.
He further remarked that school principals were appointed through interviews conducted according to guidelines issued by the Public Service Commission and not on political directives.
Also speaking during the session MP Amaraweera however said the Education Ministry can be praised for the good it has done, adding one of those initiatives being the ‘nearest school- best school’ project, which was positive and can be acknowledged as such.
He stressed that all must be ready to highlight both the good and the bad, instead of whitewashing or pointing out flaws alone.
The MP noted under the recent initiative beautiful buildings were constructed, therefore such programmes must continue.
