Attorney General Dappula de Livera has directed the Acting Inspector General of Police to transfer the investigation initiated into the Minuwangoda apparel factory from the Colombo Crimes Division to a team from other units.

The Coordinating Officer of the Attorney General State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the directive was issued in view of certain CCD Officers testing positive for COVID-19.

Jayaratne said a team of CCD officers led by an Assistant Superintendent of Police was appointed to conduct the investigation adding that the CCD Director informed the Acting IGP that several officers had tested positive for the virus.

The CCD Director had highlighted the difficulty in conducting investigations under such circumstances.

Accordingly, the directives were issued by the Attorney General today to appoint a new team.

The Attorney General directed the Acting IGP on Tuesday to conduct an investigation into the COVID-19 outbreak at the apparel factory and to submit a progress report in two weeks.

The Attorney General issued directives to investigate whether there were any shortcomings and disregard on the part of the Management of the apparel factory and to determine if regulations in the Quarantine and Prevention Ordinance were violated.

The first coronavirus case of the Minuwangoda apparel factory cluster tested positive on the 4th of October, following which more than 4,000 cases linked to the cluster have been reported.
