President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed officials to take steps to increase local production of national and Buddhist flags within the country.

The President issued these directives during an observational tour of the Dankotuwa, Kandana and Wattala industrial zones.

President Rajapaksa called for steps to be taken to ensure the demand and supply of the products are met locally.

The President also inquired into the possibility of assigning a greater percentage of responsibility of supplying textiles for school and security forces uniforms to local manufacturers from 2021.

President Rajapaksa added large and small scale producers must immediately begin production of high quality and standard material.

President Rajapaksa also encouraged the management of the Dankotuwa, Kandana and Wattala industrial zones to resume the production of textiles expeditiously.

The President’s Media Unit said the President also directed officials to look into self employed textile manufacturers and the possibility of their contribution to the industry.

The President’s Media Division said the cost incurred for imports could be reduced by 68% by increasing local textile production.
