Oil Tanker: CID to present facts against Captain

The Director of the Criminal Investigations Department has been instructed to summarize evidences under provisions of the Code of Criminal Procedure against the captain of the ‘MT New Diamond’ vessel.
The Attorney General has advised the CID Director to present facts in courts against the captain of vessel who is a Greek national.
The Coordinating Officer of the Attorney General said the CID Director was informed to obtain notice from a Magistrate Court in order to take action against the captain of the vessel.
Senior State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne said the Attorney General has determined that charges can be filed against captain under sections 25,26,38 and 53 of the Prevention of Marine Pollution Act of 2008.
Meanwhile, earlier today, the Attorney General submitted an interim claim for Rs.340 Million to the owners of the ‘MT New Diamond’ Oil Tanker for cost incurred for the assistance rendered to the vessel and other related matters.
The Coordinating Officer of the Attorney General said the claim was submitted to the lawyers in writing.
