Nationwide inflation rises to 5.6% in Oct 2019

Sri Lanka’s nationwide inflation in October 2019 determined under the National Consumer Price Index increased to 5.6 percent from 5.0 percent recorded in September on a year-on-year basis.

The Department of Census and Statistics reported the NCPI for all items for the month of October 2019 increased to131.9 from 130.6 in September.

The increase in the index point by 0.98 percent was due to the expenditure value increase of food items by 0.99 percent and expenditure value decrease of non-food items by 0.01 percent.

The Year-on-Year inflation of food group has increased from 4.9 percent in September 2019 to 7.3 percent in October 2019 and that of non-food group has decreased from 5.1 percent to 4.3 percent during this month.

Contributions to the inflation in October 2019 from food group and non-food group are 3.17 percent and 2.43 percent respectively.

The moving average inflation for the month of October 2019 was 2.8 percent. The corresponding rate for the month of September 2019 was 2.3 percent.
