NBRO landslide warnings still in place-DMC

The Disaster Management Centre says the landslide warnings issued by the National Building Research Organisation, owing to the inclement weather experienced over the island, is still in effect.

Deputy Director and Media Spokesman of the DMC Pradeep Kodippili said the landslide warnings have been issued in Dehiowita and Yatiyanthota of the Kegalle District, Kuruwita, Eheliyagoda, Imbulpe, Balangoda and Opanayake of the Ratnapura District and Haldummulla of the Badulla District.

Kodippili said spill gates of several reservoirs have also been opened owing to the incessant rain and subsequent rise in water levels.

Seven spill gates of the Thabbowa Reservoir, two of the Angamuwa Reservoir, six of the Rajanganaya Dam, eight of the Deduru Oya and one spill gate of the Kukule Ganga Dam have been opened.

The DMC urged the public living in low lying areas to remain vigilant of rising water levels.

Meanwhile, The Department of Meteorology predicts the prevailing showers in the South-Western part of the country is expected to continue during the next few hours.

The Department predicted heavy falls above 100mm at some places.

Showers will occur in other areas, particularly in the Uva and Central Provinces and in the Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa and Ampara districts while fairly heavy falls above 75mm are also likely.
