‘New Army HQ will make forces more efficient’

Army Commander Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva says the new Army Headquarters at the Defence Headquarters Complex in Akuregoda Battaramulla, will eliminate administrative challenges and increase efficiency.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the new Headquarters, the Army Commander noted the army had had to carry out their duties in the midst of various administrative difficulties.

He however stressed the Sri Lanka army will remain dedicated and make any necessary sacrifices for the safety of the people.

The new Army Headquarters at the Defence Headquarters Complex in Akuregoda, Battaramulla was declared open this morning.

President Maithripala Sirisena graced the occasion and officially declared open the new Army Headquarters.

The event was attended by the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Secretary of Defence General Shantha Kottegoda and Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana Wickramaratne among several others.

The Army, Navy and Air Force headquarters are housed in the same Defence Headquarters Complex for the first time in the country’s history.

The project got underway in 2011 with the laying of the foundation stone, and is being constructed at a cost of Rs.53.3 billion.

This is the largest building project ever to have been launched in Sri Lanka.

The opening of the Army Headquarters is the first phase of a large-scale project.

The headquarters comprises of state of the art, modern facilities including up to date security systems.

The main army offices spread across the island will also be established within the headquarters in the near future.
