Ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka convenes

The Ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka convened for the first time this morning.

The first sitting of the new Parliament commenced at 9.30am.

To commence the proceedings of the new Parliament, Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake read out the proclamation issued by the President to summon the new Parliament.

Leader of the House Minister Dinesh Gunawardena then proposed the name of Matara district Parliament-elect Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena for the post of Speaker.

Ranjith Madduma Bandara then seconded the name of Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

Since no other name was nominated for the post, Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake announced that Former Cabinet Minister and Matara district Parliament-elect Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena has been elected unanimously as the Speaker of the Ninth Parliament of Sri Lanka.

Following the announcement, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena took oaths as the new Speaker.

Subsequently, all new Members of Parliament took their official oaths or affirmation before the new Speaker.

The official oath or affirmation was administered in all three languages ​​Sinhala, Tamil or English as per the Standing Orders of Parliament. Several party leaders including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa congratulated the newly elected Speaker.
