Only one strain of coronavirus in Sri Lanka -Experts

A research conducted by the University of Sri Jayewardenepura has determined that the current COVID-19 wave in Sri Lanka is a result of a variant strain that has strong transmissibility.

The research was conducted by a team led by Professor Neelika Malavige.

The report pertaining to the matter was handed over to the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi today.

According to the report, only one strain of the virus is prevalent in the country.

Minister Wanniarachchi said despite cases detected in Minuwangoda, Peliyagoda and in areas such as Beruwala and fisheries harbours across the country, only one strain of the novel coronavirus is prevalent in the island.

The Health Minister said the research team has determined that the variant strain, due to its viral load has high infectivity.

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said therefore the public should adhere to health and safety regulations and prevent the spread of the virus.

She said as a government they are taking all measures to contain the spread of the virus and are expecting the cooperation of the general public.
