Test all MPs for coronavirus- Opposition

The Opposition has requested the government and the Speaker of House to conduct PCR tests on all Members of Parliament and ensure the safety of public representatives.

Speaking during a media briefing in Colombo, Parliamentarian Ranjith Madduma Bandara said all MPs should be subjected to PCR tests before holding future Parliament sittings.

He said since MPs meet their constituents on a regular basis, they could get the infection and thereby jeopardising the wellbeing of the entire Parliament.

MP Madduma Bandara noted that such a scenario will lead to the suspension of parliamentary sittings for months.

The Parliamentarian added that although country’s laws are legislated in Parliament, the existing laws are being flouted by the house when holding sessions.

He said the regulation that mandate a distance of a metre between two individuals in public places, has not been adhere to when allocating seat in Parliament.

He said when debating the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution, MPs will be violating health protocols that have been gazetted to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara added that the government is attempting enact a new law by violating existing legislations.

He therefore requested the Speaker of House to take necessary action before holding the Parliamentary debate on the proposed 20th Amendment.
