PM says fight against COVID-19 will continue

The construction of the first phase of the Ruwanpura Expressway between Kahathuduwa to Ingiriya officially got underway this morning.
The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa. The Prime Minister’s Media Division said the Premier attended the event via video technology. The length of the Ruwanpura Expressway is 24.3km. The Ruwanpura Expressway, which is to begin at the Kahathuduwa Interchange will direct traffic through Ingiriya, Rathnapura to Pelmadulla. The total length of the project is 73.9km and is to be completed in three stages. The project is estimated to cost around Rs. 54.7 billion.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says the fight against COVID-19 will continue while keeping the country open.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony this morning, Prime Minister Rajapaksa said while taking measures to contain the spread of the virus the government is also taking steps to strengthen the economy.
Premier Rajapaksa said he believes an efficient roadway network is an important development factor in a country.
He added this has been showcased before through the Mahinda Chinthanaya programme.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said at present, the entire globe is fighting against coronavirus but stated the country cannot close amidst these issues.
The Prime Minister noted the financial status of the public should also be considered while controlling the virus and noted the importance of all citizens adhering to health guidelines and face the critical time as one country.
Prime Minister Rajapaksa said the plans were drawn in 2014 to construct the Ruwanpura Expressway which is the seventh expressway in Sri Lanka.
He noted the government at the time could not continue the process since it lost the elections but hoped the newly appointed good governance government would take forward the initiative.
The Premier claimed the Yahapalana government however did not focus on developing the country while adding the Expressway initiative met with many accusations and criticisms.
He further stated the critics are now enjoyed the comfort of the Expressways.
The Prime Minister said the Central Expressway stretch from Mirigama to Pothuhera is currently being completed and will be opened to the public in the near future.
