The fourth edition of the Indian Ocean Conference 2019 is set to get underway in the Maldives today and tomorrow.

The conference will be held under the theme “Securing the Indian Ocean Region: Traditional and Non-Traditional Challenges”. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and representatives of 33 other countries are due to address the conference.

The conference will deliberate on developing an effective regional institutional mechanism for implementation of prevailing norms and rules.

The conference will also provide stakeholders an opportunity to discuss building an institutional framework for managing the threats to regional peace and human security.

Delegates from over 40 countries including members of parliament, personal armed forces, ambassadors, senior diplomats, senior bureaucrats, prominent authors, academicians and media personnel will attend the conference.

The first edition of OIC was hosted in Singapore in 2016. This was followed by two successive editions in Sri Lanka and Vietnam respectively.
