President and PM receive COVID-19 vaccine doses

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa have received the COVID-19 vaccine dose.

When inquired by media during the weekly Cabinet decision media briefing, Cabinet Spokesman Minister of Mass Media Keheliya Rambukwella confirmed the development.

When inquired by media on whether veteran cricketer Sanath Jayasuriya was administered the vaccine, Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Ramesh Pathirana said several political leaders in the country and popular public figures including Sanath Jayasuriya were administered the vaccine dose, in order to encourage the public to obtain the vaccine.

Media also inquired into whether a concern will arise as over 250,000 persons have been administered the first dose of the vaccine, while initially plans were made to administer the first dose of the vaccine to 250,000 persons and leave the remaining 250,000 of the first stock received, to administer as the second dose.

In response Minister Ramesh Pathirana said experts have suggested that administering the second dose after three months will boost immunity adding that Sri Lanka will receive another batch of vaccines promptly, to administer the second dose.

He added therefore there will be no concern regarding the time period.

Minister Pathirana also refuted claims that the vaccine dose was administered to certain individuals based on personal affiliations.

He claimed the opposition has been levelling various allegations against the vaccination programme.
